Yes. A few trucking companies in Florida recruit individuals with DUIs; however, most of them will mandate that a specific period must have passed since the event happened. In most cases, the countdown will start spinning once the event has been remedied, i.e. driver’s license has already been regained.
If at all conceivable, drivers with DUIs or DWIs should seek company-sponsored CDL training or, at the minimum least, obtain many other pre-hire letters as attainable prior to enrolling in truck driving school.
What is DUI?
Driving under the Influence (DUI) is a legal infraction in the state of Florida. A DUI conviction is possible if an individual is discovered to be operating under the influence or has a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or more. Gary Sasser, then 20, acquired Averitt Express in October 1971, when it had two partners, three tractors, and five trailers. Currently, Averitt Express is recognized as one of the country’s largest providers of freight transportation and supply chain management. Their hiring qualifications include the following;
- There have been no violations in the preceding 12 months (15 mph or greater, following too closely, improper passing, traffic offense committed in a CMV in connection with a fatality)
- There have been no dangerous driving prosecutions in the last five years.
- There have been no DUI or DWI convictions in the last five years.
- There have been no suspensions or revocations for moving violations in the last 5 years.
- There has been no more than one moving violation in the last 12 months.
- No more than two moving violations in the last three years.
TransAm began operations in 1987 with 70 tractors and 100 trailers transporting temperature-controlled freight. TransAm has grown above its first location in Kansas City, Missouri, and now maintains over 1,400 tractors and 2,400 trailers from its command center in neighboring Olathe, Kansas.
TransAm also keeps a manned terminal, a driver’s facility, and a servicing station. TransAm Trucking’s recruitment requirements include the following;

- A DOT physical and drug test are required.
Prime Inc., premised in Springfield, Missouri, was founded in 1970 with only one dump truck and has grown to become one of the biggest trucking companies in North America, with more than 4,000 trucks and 6,000 trailers. The temperature-controlled fleet is Prime’s biggest segment.
However, Prime does seem to have a flatbed segment and a food-grade tanker section. The company has its own CDL training scheme to assist with organizational success and staffing. The recruitment requirements are the following;
- Have an employment record and references that can be verified.
- References and former jobs will be reviewed and should be provable.
- There have been no irresponsible indictments in the last three years.
- There have been no license suspensions for points in the last three years.
- No more than two moving violations in the previous year.
- There have been no failed or declined drug or alcohol tests in the last three years (including DWIs, DUIs, and BACs).
- One or more of the following would be presented: US Passport, State Certified Copy of Birth Certificate, or INS paperwork demonstrating US Citizenship or current permanent residence.
- If a drug or alcohol-related test is refused, the applicant would have to provide proof of concluded Substance Abuse Counseling.
Although there are companies that will hire you even if you have a DUI, have in mind that anyone found guilty of a DUI in Florida will experience additional insurance rates down the road. Your truck insurance policy would either be forced to cancel or increased.
If your insurance provider nullifies your policy, you will be obliged to purchase a policy for ‘high-risk’ drivers, which will have high rates.
A second guilty verdict for a CDL-holder for driving a vehicle, commercial or otherwise, while under the effects of alcohol or a banned substance, or a second refusal, according to FMCSA regulations, will invalidate a driver from procuring a CDL for life.
